Practical technology / Web & software development

Useful software.
Built around your work.

A website should help customers do what they came to do. An internal tool should help your team get on with the job. I build and improve both, with the business need at the centre.

When your website or systems cannot do what you need

You might need a clearer enquiry journey, a customer portal, an internal business tool that replaces a shared spreadsheet or an API integration between systems. Bespoke software development can address a missing capability, but sometimes a focused extension to an existing website or web application is enough.

I can help businesses that need practical development without knowing all the technical details in advance. Tell me who will use the tool, what they need to achieve and what currently gets in the way. That gives us a better starting point than a list of fashionable technologies.

What I can build or improve

  • Websites and front-end functionality that make customer tasks easier.
  • Internal web applications for shared information and repeatable workflows.
  • Customer portals and useful self-service features.
  • Backend processes, database queries and integrations.
  • Changes to existing websites, including forms and measurement.

Fix, connect or build?

A new system is not always necessary. I first look at what you have, where the constraints are and whether a focused change could solve the problem. Understanding the process behind the request helps decide whether to change the workflow, integrate existing systems or build something new.

For example, if staff repeatedly look up an order in one system to answer a question from another, an authorised read-only view could put the relevant information in one place. If a form produces incomplete enquiries, clearer questions and validation might be enough.

Conventional development is often the right fit for clear business rules. JavaScript, backend code and database processes can deliver predictable behaviour. Automation might mean a small script or a scheduled API integration; AI is useful only where its additional capabilities serve the task.

How I approach development

We start with users and their tasks, including the devices they use, access they need and information they handle. I review the existing setup before deciding what should change. Then we agree a useful scope and the behaviour that will show it is working.

For a new tool, that may mean building a small working version of the central workflow before expanding it. Testing should cover ordinary use and the situations that go wrong: missing information, duplicate submissions, unavailable systems and different screen sizes.

Ownership matters after launch. Hosting, source code, credentials, updates and any ongoing support need a clear arrangement. The aim is software your business can understand and use, with complexity proportionate to the problem.

Development experience with depth

I bring more than 30 years of professional software and technology experience. At EBS New Media I developed an electronic programme guide system used for many years in its television listings operation. My wider background includes telecommunications billing, database development and administration, web applications and integrations. See the career experience behind my development work.

That systems background also supports reporting, SQL and analytics implementation: making information useful is often as important as collecting it. Modern AI-assisted development adds tools to the work, backed by an understanding of the software being built.

Before you commission a build

Can you improve an existing website?

Yes. The first step is to understand its technology, access arrangements and the change you need. A focused improvement can be more appropriate than starting again.

Do I need a detailed specification?

No. A description of the task and a few examples of what is difficult are useful. We can turn that into a defined scope before implementation.

How much will it cost?

That depends on the scope, integrations and existing system. I need to understand those before giving a meaningful estimate. We can discuss a smaller first step if the whole idea is too large to tackle at once.

What do you wish your systems could do?

Describe the missing feature, awkward workaround or customer problem. You do not need to choose the technology first.
